Purpose of our policy and procedures
In an effort to accomplish our mission, we have set up these guidelines to foster relationship and communication among Kentucky Repertory Dance Theatre teachers, students, and families.
Standards for the KRDT community
The KRDT family (staff, board, students, and their parents) strives to be in fellowship with one another and will follow peacemaking principles found in Matthew 18:15-16.
“If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault, between you and him alone. If he listens to you, you have gained your brother. But if he does not listen take one or two others along with you, that every charge may be established by the evidence of two or three witnesses.”
Verbal or physical intimidation and harassment are inappropriate and will not be tolerated by anyone in the KRDT family.
How KRDT communicates with families
More and more we realize that people are not checking email. It is important that we be able to communicate with all our families in a timely manner. Therefore, we are moving to a new way of sending out KRDT news and updates.
We will be using Remind, an app and website developed initially for schools to have a safe way for teachers to communicate with parents and students. A few of our moms are involved in groups who use Remind and it has worked well in those groups.
Every family will be on at least two of our remind groups: the main KRDT list and a specific class list.
You can receive our announcements by text or email or both. How great is that? After you register with KRDT, we’ll send you a code to text or email so you can sign up. Please use your actual name with Remind so we know who you are. Others will be able to see your name, but will not be able to see your phone number or email address.
Using remind app for communication
There is a remind app for smartphones. You can receive texts without the app. You can receive texts even if you don’t have a smartphone.
You can opt-out or unsubscribe at any time. If you can’t figure it out, just ask and we’ll remove you from the list.
Please note that there will be a permanent record of any messages sent via remind.

KRDT Parent Responsibilities
Be on time for class
Please have your dancer in the studio 10 minutes before the class start time. Dancers should be dressed with hair in bun and ready for opening prayer and beginning warm-ups. While we most definitely know and operate in God’s wonderful loving grace, we must enforce repeated tardies with consequences. Missing warm-up plies and tendus puts students at risk for injury. For repeated tardies, students will be asked to sit and make notes about the class. If there is a scheduling issue, please discuss with Nancy Durall.
Follow the dress code
Please refer to our full dress code here. But quite simply, girls need to have pink tights, pink ballet shoes, black leotard, and a neat, tight hair bun. Boys need to be neat with black shorts or pants, ballet shoes, and white shirt.
Make ballet class a priority
The staff appreciates committed dancers and their families who make the effort to attend ballet classes and rehearsals every week. We encourage you to limit absences to cases of sickness or emergency and hope that you will consider attending ballet a priority. When a dancer misses class, it affects not just the individual who isn’t present, but it affects everyone who is trying to learn choreography together.
If you attend all classes, you will get your money’s worth, stay strong technically, promote ministry unity, and grow in character both spiritually and emotionally. For these reasons, we hope that parents would not consider KRDT classes as just an extra activity or a privilege that can be taken away for discipline purposes. Let teachers and Nancy Durall know when there will be unavoidable absences. Here is a ballet world quote that has proven true over my years of dance training:
“Miss one class, you know it;
miss two classes, your teacher knows it;
miss three classes,the audience knows it.”
Please keep quiet in the studio
Parents, thanks for your consideration in keeping instructional time as quiet and focused as possible. This is also important because KRDT rents space from Dancers’ Studio, and Miss Laurie or her staff may be having class as well.
If you stay in the studio, please enjoy your conversations in quiet whispers.
Disruptive siblings should be taken out of the studio. Do not allow your children to run in the studio waiting area. Please bring quiet activities for yourself and children (homework, movies with earbuds or earphones, reading, knitting.)
If you opt to leave during class, take your children not enrolled in class with you or leave them in the direct care of another adult.
Also, please keep food in the kitchen to keep our waiting area clean and free of crumbs.
Pay your tuition on time
A $25 registration fee is due when registering. Tuition can be paid in one of 3 ways.
Monthly payments are due by the first of the month.
Semester payments are due by August 1 and January 1.
An annual payment is due by August 1.
Realize the nature of ballet
Ballet is athletic. Although every precaution is taken to prevent injuries, they occasionally happen.
Ballet is a discipline that requires technique and body alignment. Teachers give a mix of positive reinforcement, verbal corrections, and hands-on guidance.
We want those who are new to ballet to realize that teachers touch students during class in a way that is appropriate in a ballet class setting. Our teachers are very careful to make sure new students are ok with this before we do it. (For example, a teacher may put her hand on a student’s shoulder or back to help the dancer stand in proper alignment or put her hand on a foot to help with pointed toe or turn-out.)
KRDT Student Responsibilities
Follow the dress code.
Don’t lose track of time in the dressing room so you’re late for class.
Be kind and encouraging to the other students in your class.
Visit with your ballet friends before and after class, not during class.
Don’t talk in between ballet exercises and combinations.
Accept the teachers’ corrections. They are trying to help you be a better dancer.
KRDT Teacher Responsibilities
Teachers will arrive in the studio several minutes early in order to welcome students and start class on time. Teachers will also end class on time.
Verbal technique corrections will be given in love and wisdom, seasoned with grace.
Physical technique corrections will be given with the common sense knowledge of appropriate touch in a ballet instructional setting. Before touching a student, teachers will be confident that the student would be comfortable with a firm, yet gentle touch.
In case of student injury, parents will be alerted immediately.
The above guidelines for teachers come from the KRDT Standards of Teaching that all teachers must review and sign annually. Parents, if you would like to read the full standards, please ask Nancy Durall.
Administration
Class cancellation
If we need to cancel a class due to the weather or another reason, we’ll let you know via the remind app (described at the top of this page) and we’ll post it on our facebook page. A makeup class will be scheduled before the end of the semester for any class due to cancellation.
Missed classes
If a student has an excused absence for class, speak to Nancy Durall regarding an appropriate make-up class. Refunds will not be given for missed classes.
If you have scheduled a private lesson and don’t attend, you are responsible for the full lesson fee. Rescheduling is an option if a teacher and studio space are available.
Refunds
Refunds will not be given for missed classes.
The annual $25 registration fee is non-refundable.
Generally, refunds are not given for withdrawing from class after the semester has begun.
Monthly fees will not be refunded.
If a student needs to withdraw from class due to injury or other medical reason or if you move out of the area, we will gladly refund any tuition paid for unused classes minus a 25% administration fee.
